Ricky Tomlinson will this week undergo surgery to unblock his arteries.
The Royle Family actor is due to have an angioplasty operation at Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool on Friday.
Doctors have told him he would be at high risk of heart problems without the surgery. Because of the situation he is campaigning to tackle the disease.
"Checking your heart health is so vitally important," he advised. "I know lots of men, me included, aren’t keen on getting checked out but a simple heart check takes a few minutes and really could detect early signs of heart disease.
"I’m keen to get a million men having their hearts checked out so they shouldn’t have to go through what I’ve got to go through with the surgery."
Lloyds Pharmacy is currently offering free 20-minute checks to males.
