TV presenter and journalist Jeremy Clarkson has been cleared of a motoring charge by the City of London Magistrates.

The Top Gear star was charged with the offence of failing to name the driver on a speeding ticket passed on to him by the car hire organisation Alfa Romeo.

Clarkson was alleged to have been caught speeding 30mph over the speed limit, while driving one of the company's cars on the A40 in Ruislip last year.

The TV star's solicitor claimed that case was unprovable, because the car firm only had details of who was hiring the vehicle and not who was driving it.

Magistrates dismissed the charge after the prosecution failed to offer up any further evidence to support their case.
