Kielty apologises over McCann jokes

Patrick Kielty has apologised after a number of people walked out of his stand-up show in Dublin last week following jokes about missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann.

The TV presenter was appearing at the Olympia Theatre when he joked that Madeleine's parents, who are official suspects in the case, should have disposed of her body by putting it in luggage on a Ryanair flight.

He also made the audience vote over whether they thought that Kate and Gerry McCann were guilty or not, leading some fans to leave the show.

A spokesperson for Kielty apologised for offending people, but insisted: "The small number of walkouts reflects the sensitivity of those few people, rather than the content of the show.

"Patrick is a comedian and the material was written to reflect the media's changing attitude towards the case and should be taken in that context."

She also pointed out that the comedian had used the same jokes during a show in London but no one had walked out or complained about the gags.
