Lennon photo found after 50 years

A photograph of a 17-year-old John Lennon has been discovered after 50 years.

The black and white snap was unearthed on BBC One's Inside Out North West after being locked in a cupboard for half a century.

The image, which shows the late singer sporting a heavy camel-hair coat and a quiff, was taken on Liverpool's Lime Street in 1958.

He is pictured with Nigel Walley, ex-manager of the band The Quarrymen, which later evolved into the Beatles.

Walley told the programme he had given the photo to his brother, who believed it had been stolen from his desk at school.

He said: "Goodness knows where it got to since then. It's very emotional for me seeing this photo again after all these years. John was a very good friend of mine. One thing I know, John would have loved seeing this photograph. It's something I'll always treasure now.

"I recognise my writing on the back of it. I've put '5 May, 1958. Lime Street.' I haven't a clue what we were doing then - just a couple of lads out in town larking about probably. But we look happy then."

Inside Out North West airs on BBC One at 7.30pm.
