Jake Gyllenhaal announces he's single

Jake Gyllenhaal has confirmed that he has split up with girlfriend Reese Witherspoon by announcing that he is single during a television interview.

Gyllenhaal has had an on/off relationship with Witherspoon, but speculation of another split began when the pair turned up to the premiere of their new film Rendition separately.

A source told US magazine: "They didn’t even talk to each other at the post-reception except when a photographer pulled them together for a picture with the director - and he was standing in between them.

"You know how actors are who are in projects together - they always go up to each other and say, ‘It’s so good to see you’. For actors to not talk to each other, they have to either hate each other - which they don’t - or they’re hiding something."

The Brokeback Mountain actor confirmed the split rumours while speaking on Jonathan Ross's chat show. After being asked if he was single, he replied: "Ah, at this point yes, on behalf of the ladies I’m single." To the disappointment of Ross's house band, Four Poofs And A Piano, he added: "On behalf of the band, I’m not."
