Kylie and Jason: A History

Kylie and Jason: A History
Kylie Minogue's wedding to Jason Donovan on Aussie soap Neighbours has been voted the most romantic TV nuptials of all time. Sweethearts on and off-screen, the pair were the '80s Posh and Becks as the UK went mad for the show. Since splitting in 1989, they have remained tight-lipped about their affair, but the former flames are making headlines all over again since Jason published his tell-all life story. As their relationship seems to stagger from bad to worse, DS asks - where did it all go wrong?

Jason and Kylie starred in kids' drama Skyways at the age of 11 before reuniting to play mullet-haired Scott Robinson and tomboy Charlene Mitchell in Neighbours in 1986. Despite initially denying a real-life romance, Jason claims in his autobiography Between the Lines that Kylie became his "first real love affair" after they got it on at a Travelodge in Sydney.

When Kylie quit the soap in 1988 and headed to London in a bid for pop stardom, her lover was hot on her heels. Both scored a series of solo pop hits under the guidance of Stock, Aitken and Waterman, with duet 'Especially for You' stubbornly refusing to leave the charts for 14 weeks.

But the couple soon found themselves drifting apart and Kylie fell under the spell of late INXS star Michael Hutchence at a concert in 1989. Jason later claimed that the news was like a "punch in the stomach", and seeing snaps of the lovebirds was "like salt rubbed into my wounds". He turned increasingly to drugs after the split and was dropped by his record company in 1992. Meanwhile, Kylie distanced herself from her one-time amour, once revealing that her sex life only began properly when she met Hutchence and dismissing her previous affair as a "childhood romance".

In 2004, rumours surfaced that Kylie planned to invite Jason on tour with her, but the idea was axed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer the following year. Although she said later: "Jason is a great guy. I got a lovely message from him when I was really sick. I was so touched and I wrote back", the enténte was not to last.

Earlier this year, Jason signed a £1 million deal to publish his autobiography, in which he revealed intimate details about the couple's youthful romance. When revelations about the affair began to come thick and fast, Kylie reportedly took the step of banning her ex from a forthcoming ITV show celebrating her 20-year career. As the book continues to make headlines, it remains to be seen if these Neighbours can ever truly be friends.
