Spears hands herself in to police

Britney Spears has handed herself in to a Los Angeles police station so that she can be booked for a hit and run incident and for driving without a valid licence.

The troubled singer turned herself in to the Van Nuys station last night and spent about half an hour being photographed and having her fingerprints taken.

Spears' charges stem from an incident in August when her car scuffed another vehicle while being filmed by paparazzi. She then reportedly checked out the damage on her own car before walking away to a nearby building.

She was then charged on a count of hit and run and also for not having a valid licence to drive in California.

When leaving the police station last night, she said the police officers had been "really nice" to her.

She is due back in court on October 25.
