Copperfield axes shows over rape claims

Magician David Copperfield has cancelled shows in Asia after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the Bahamas.

The FBI raided the 51-year-old's warehouse in Las Vegas last week, reportedly seizing a computer hard drive, a digital camera memory chip and £937,000 in cash.

Copperfield was scheduled to perform in Indonesia today, followed by Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. However, a Thai organiser confirmed that he had been told the shows would be postponed indefinitely.

Copperfield's lawyer David Chesnoff has denied the accusations against his client, saying: "An unidentified woman has made serious allegations against David Copperfield.

"Although authorities have not revealed her identity to us, we know these allegations are false because David Copperfield has never forced himself on anyone."

Promoters in Asia are attempting to negotiate with the illusionist's management to reschedule the performances or recoup some of their losses.
