Morrissey named "most northern" male

Morrissey has taken top spot in a poll to find England's most "northern" male.

The singer beat comedian George Formby in the survey, conducted by Manchester art gallery The Lowry.

The Smiths also beat groups including the Beatles and Oasis to the title of most northern rock band.

Comedienne Victoria Wood won most northern female, while The Royle Family triumphed in the TV comedy section.

Coronation Street was named most northern TV drama, with Open All Hours shop-keeper Arkwright (Ronnie Barker) winning most northern fictional character.

Elsewhere, fish and chips was voted the most northern food and the Liver Building won most iconic building.

50,000 people took part in the online survey.
