Keane singer Tom Chaplin has spoken about the "bad effect" that jibes from other artists had on him.

The band's frontman was upset when Kasabian's Tom Meighan claimed that he lived on a diet of "pies and Quavers", while Serge Pizzorno said that he was "posh" and "addicted to port".

"I took a lot of what was said to heart and it had a really, really bad effect on me as a person," Tom told The Mirror. "It made me very insular and I just wanted to run away from things. At the end of the day, it was very hurtful."

"A lot of bands want to have their voices heard and it's a shame when you devalue that by making pointless, bitchy comments aimed at others," he continued. "If they're not selling enough records, some groups try to redress the balance by slagging other people off.

"We're all from the same school and have the same dream, and it's a bit upsetting, not to mention pointless. I've become immune to a lot of things and I've had to develop a thick skin."

Chaplin, who battled a drug addiction but is now clean following a stint in rehab, added: "You can get sucked into a negative way of thinking but, thankfully, you bounce back."
