Watson: I'm happy to be alive

Rex Features

Russell Watson has said that he is happy to be alive after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour.

The singer had a three-hour operation at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle on Thursday, after collapsing in the recording studio.

Doctors had intially feared the procedure would damage his voice after doctors were forced to operate via his mouth.

Speaking outside the hospital, Watson said: "I'm just happy to be alive and be with my children. I'm very emotional right now.

"It's my daughter's birthday, she's 13, and I didn't think I'd get to see that."

Russell has returned to his home in Wilmslow but will now undergo months of radiotherapy.
