Heather Mills has been accused of exaggerating her links with two charities.

Sir Paul McCartney's estranged wife claims to be a leading backer of the organisation Protect Darfur, which raises funds for victims of the war-torn African country.

But a spokesman for the group said: "We are surprised that Heather Mills has chosen to name us. We have no formalised arrangement with her."

She has also professed to be a spokesperson for the charity No More Landmines, but its director Neil Morrans said: "We've not had any discussions. I met her once in August." However, there is a page devoted to her work on the organisation's website, which states that she is a patron of Adopt-A-Minefield.

The 39-year-old insisted that 80% of her income goes to charity in a series of television interviews in the US and UK over the last two days.

She played a tape off-camera during one appearance, on which she claimed McCartney confesses to hitting his first wife Linda.

She also accused him of "doing nothing" to protect her from the press, saying: "I have pleaded, I have begged. He knows I was at a suicide point and still nothing has been done."
