The estranged wife of Sir Paul McCartney shocked viewers last week when she told GMTV that she had considered suicide over the media spin she has endured over the last 18 months.
She then spent the week speaking to the British and American media, claiming that she has tapes of McCartney admitting to hitting his first wife Linda and of him laughing at Mills' prosthetic leg.
This morning she returned to GMTV, telling the presenters: "It’s been unbelievably cathartic. It’s the difference between being in prison and being on parole. That’s the situation at the moment. 18 months of the worse press ever and I’ve got the chance to protect myself and defend myself and my daughter."
She also insisted that the media's continued falsehoods had proved her right, saying that the papers' lying about her comparing herself to Kate McCann had only fuelled her case against them.
But when Mills was asked why she wasn't just keeping quiet, she said that she had tried but to no avail, saying: "I was quiet for a year. I didn’t say a word but I had 4,000 articles written about me."
Mills also claimed that relations have been "very civil" between her and Paul for the sake of their daughter Beatrice. But she refused to confirm whether she had been ordered to not speak by Sir Paul's party, saying: "I can’t go into whether he’s tried to gag me.
"The reason we are not divorced is basically because I am not meant to talk. But again, we’re going into the whole Paul thing and the whole thing is about the campaign."
She added: "I’m so happy because you can’t imagine, after 18 months of abuse and I got to create a campaign to change the European law and the support’s been immense."
