Madonna raises money for Malawi orphans

Madonna has teamed up with fashion label Gucci to hold a fundraising event to help orphans in Malawi.

The singer, who's been trying to adopt 2-year-old David Banda from the region, will host the event to open the fashion house's new store on New York's Fifth Avenue.

Madonna is hoping to raise at least $2 million (£1 million) for UNICEF and the charity she co-founded, Raising Malawi, from the dinner, music performance and party on February 6 next year.

In a statement the star said: "I am grateful that Gucci is joining forces with me to bring attention to a country with millions of children in desperate need of our help.

"Raising Malawi has already done tremendous work in helping these children. But we have much more to do and this event will surely bring us closer to our goal."

Celebrities who also co-chair at the event include Demi Moore, Salma Hayek and Gwyneth Paltrow.
