George Clooney has been nominated for the Tipperary Peace Prize for his work in Darfur, it has been revealed.

The public nominated the actor alongside Cardinal Sean Brady; Northern Ireland First Minister Rev Ian Paisley; Niall Mellon of the Niall Mellon Township Trust; former Taoiseach Dr Garrett Fitzgerald; Iranian lawyer and former Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ibadi; Indian spiritual teacher Sri Sri Ravi Shankar; and Suzanne Mubarak.

The actor demanded help for the people in Darfur when he spoke in front of the UN Security Council last year. He has also travelled to countries such as Sudan, Egypt, Chad and China to campaign on the issue.

The winner will be announced by the Tipperary Peace Convention Committee early next year.

Previous winners of the prize, which recognises people that promote peace in Ireland and abroad, include Bob Geldof, Mikhail Gorbachev and the New York Fire Department following the 9/11 attacks.
