The wedding between Eddie Murphy and filmmaker Tracey Edmonds may not be valid because they do not live near the location where they got married.
The couple held the wedding ceremony on New Year's Day on a beach near the French Polynesia island of Bora Bora in front of a few family and friends.
But general law specialist Malgras Benoit claimed that couples that wish to exchange vows on the islands must live near them for at least 30 days of the year.
Benoit said: "A marriage on the beach would be like… a fake marriage. It's not a real marriage, if it is on the beach with only a local priest. I think it was just an exotic, artistic 'marriage'.
"You need to have residence for at least 30 days - one month in the island of Bora Bora for instance - and this is not the case."
The specialist explained that there could be an exception to the 30 day rule - but only if the actor had married Edmonds in the town hall in front of the mayor.
Murphy has five children with his ex-wife Nicole Mitchell and one daughter with Spice Girl Melanie Brown.
