Actor Heath Ledger had pneumonia when he died, a report has claimed.
The 28-year-old was found unconscious at his New York apartment yesterday afternoon and was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics failed to revive him.
Website TMZ now claims that police have contacted Ledger's relatives and assured them that the death was accidental.
A spokesman for the family said they were particularly upset over speculation that he may have committed suicide after pills were found by his bed.
Elsewhere, it has been reported that he took sleeping tablets after suffering from insomnia while filming Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight.
During an interview with the New York Times last November, Ledger said: "Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night. I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."
He added that he had taken medication in an effort to catch up with lost sleep, but it had failed to quiet his racing mind.
