Comedian Will Ferrell has won University College Dublin's James Joyce Award.

The Elf star was awarded the honour by the university's literary and historical society.

Previous winners of the accolade include UN weapons inspector Hans Blix and US academic Noam Chomsky.

Talking about the award, Ferrell told RTE: "Hans and I hang out all the time.

"It's really not that weird for me. He said, 'I've got a feeling you're going to get the same award I got' and he was right."
