An investigation has been launched into how Heath Ledger obtained the prescription drugs that killed him.

An autopsy yesterday revealed that the Brokeback Mountain star died from an accidental overdose of six different types of medication.

Sleeping pills, anti-anxiety drugs and painkillers were found in his system, three of which were prescribed in Europe. The New York City Medical Examiner's Office said the levels of drugs were not high but had been fatal when taken together.

The US Drug Enforcement Agency and the NYPD are now looking into how he managed to get hold of the medication.

DEA spokesman Erin Mulvey said: "We are working with the NYPD to identify any illegally-prescribed drugs that may have been prescribed to Ledger."

It is believed that a private funeral will take place on Saturday after Ledger's family and ex-fiancée Michelle Williams flew into his home city of Perth.
