Heath Ledger's dad has said the actor's death should be a lesson to others about the dangers of mixing prescription drugs.

It was revealed yesterday that the 28-year-old died from an accidental overdose of six different types of medication.

Kim Ledger said in a statement: "Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage.

"While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy."

He said the family was humbled to be "among millions of people worldwide who may have suffered the tragic loss of a child", adding: "Few can understand the hollow, wrenching, and enduring agony parents silently suffer when a child predeceases them."

Ledger is expected to be buried in a private ceremony in his home city of Perth in the next two days.

The US Drug Enforcement Agency and the NYPD have launched an investigation into how he obtained the drugs, some of which were prescribed in Europe.
