Blur drummer Dave Rowntree will stand for the Labour Party in the next general election.

Rowntree is running for the Cities of London and Westminster seat and will have to overturn an 8,995 majority held by Conservative MP Mark Field.

The musician moved into politics following Blur's 2002 release Think Tank. He failed in his bid to become a London councillor last year.

He hopes that his campaign can inspire "a whole generation of non-voters", reports The Times.

Damon Albarn recently claimed a Blur reunion couldn't happen because the rest of the band hated him, while guitarist Graham Coxon revealed he was content with the fact the Britpop group may never record together again.
