Combs had a small role in 2001's Monster's Ball and in the direct-to-DVD sequel to gangster film Carlito's Way.
Speaking in a conference call, Combs said: "You will see me in more things to come. I want to take my time and feel confident.
"I still have a lot more growing and a lot more learning to do. Acting was one of the most challenging things I've ever done as an artist. It truly changed my life."
Combs will next appear in a TV adaptation of Broadway play A Raisin In The Sun, which charts the struggles of a poor black family in Chicago.
"I was destined to play this role because my father was killed when I was three years old, and I grew up in a house with three women - my mother, my grandmother and my sister," revealed Combs.
"I went through those years of having to watch my mother and my grandmother work two jobs and not being able to take care of my family, and the look on my mother's face when I would ask for a thing and she couldn't afford it."
