Jerry Springer blasphemy petition dismissed

The House of Lords has refused to hear a petition of appeal from an activist group seeking to prosecute the BBC for blasphemy.

Stephen Green, director of the lobby group Christian Voice, felt that the musical Jerry Springer: The Opera contained images that "vilify God and the Bible".

After their petition was rejected by the House of Lords, Green called it an "ignoble move", before adding: "It brings down the judgment of God on us all."

The petition failed because it did "not raise an arguable point of law of general public importance".

The group originally brought the case to the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court but had it rejected, a decision that was upheld by the High Court at the end of last year.

Jerry Springer: The Opera - written by Stewart Lee and Richard Thomas - originally ran as a musical from 2003 to 2006. It aired on BBC Two in early 2005 and received several thousand complaints prior to and after broadcast. The show recently debuted on the New York stage with Harvey Keitel in the lead role.
