A man who sent dozens of letters to Jodie Foster has been charged with mailing a bomb threat to a Los Angeles airport.

Michael Smegal, 42, is accused of sending a threatening hand-written letter to Van Nuys Airport last December.

The FBI affidavit revealed that more than 100 letters containing a reference to the actress were sent to celebrities, airports and other locations between September 2007 and January 2008.

They were all sent from either Massachusetts or Rhode Island and many included the words “Jodie Foster S” and “going to be a gas bomb in this building".

Foster received anonymous letters and packages from Massachusetts from 2004, some of which were threatening. Smegal allegedly admitted sending them in 2005 and vowed to stop.

Smegal, of Holliston, Massachusetts faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He has denied the charges.
