Paul McCartney has voiced his support for a campaign to end kangaroo culling in Australia.

The veteran popstar and vegetarian protested about a possible cull of 500 creatures near a military base in Canberra.

According to local authorities, the animals may have a damaging effect on other species in the area.

McCartney has teamed up with the organisation Viva!, which challenges the killing of kangaroos and the sale of their meat around the globe.

The former Beatle said: "There is an urgent need for action to protect kangaroos from a barbaric industry which slaughters them for meat and leather."
