Ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne may be arrested after failing to pay a £400 180-mile taxi ride.

The 40-year-old former England midfielder told driver Hanzale Aziz that he had no cash to pay for the journey from Newcastle to Birmingham, despite earlier promising a "big tip".

Gascoigne, who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act earlier this year, behaved aggressively and irrationally, according to Aziz.

The driver told The Sun: "He was irrational – friendly one moment, aggressive the next. He was making a lot of calls on his mobile.

"He rang his dad and said, 'I’m in trouble again'. He told his dad he had drunk two bottles of wine.

"He kept falling asleep. One time he woke up and asked me where the other driver was - he was confused.

"He asked where his wine was. He was eating bag after bag of Doritos crisps - opening them by banging his hands together so the bags burst and the crisps were going everywhere."

Aziz added: "It cost me a lot - the fare, petrol and the income I missed."
