Kiefer Sutherland put his recent jail time to good use, his father has said.

Donald Sutherland said Kiefer's stint behind bars had made him more committed than ever to his role as Jack Bauer in 24.

He was released in January after spending 48 days in prison for driving under the influence.

According to his dad, he is now determined that the next two seasons of the show, on which he serves as executive producer, will be "the best two years of TV" in the US.

Donald told Hello!: "Jail was tough for him. He had 48 days inside, [many] hours a day in solitary. It was very, very cold."

It was earlier reported that Kiefer is to direct a music video and voice a documentary for Brit band The Feeling.
