Jerry Seinfeld escaped injury when he was forced to swerve his car off the road after its brakes failed, reports say.

The comic flipped his car as he turned away from a traffic junction in the Hamptons, Long Island when he realised his vehicle wouldn't stop.

Seinfeld's two-door 1967 Fiat stopped yards away from the highway, and East Hampton Town Police Chief Todd Sarris told the New York Post that the comedian's quick thinking "probably avoided a very serious accident".

"He was a little shocked when he walked in and it started to dawn on him what happened," said Seinfeld's wife, Jessica.

The 53-year-old comic added: "It is not something I plan to make a habit of."

The former sitcom star and stand-up has one of the world's largest collections of Porsches and admitted his favourite was the 1955 Spyder.
