Publicist Max Clifford is being treated for prostate cancer.

The 65-year-old, whose famous clients include Kerry Katona and Simon Cowell, was diagnosed with the disease six months ago after an annual check-up.

He told the Daily Star that he decided to go public with the news as he has nearly finished a course of radiotherapy.

He said: "It was a real shock. The C-word is one you never want to hear. I kept wondering what was around the corner. My attitude is to face things full on. It's not about being brave, it's about being realistic."

Clifford's wife Liz died from bone cancer five years ago and he admitted that he was reluctant to break the news to their daughter Louise and his partner Jo Westwood.

He said: "It was particularly hard telling Louise because of what happened to Liz. I didn't want anyone else to know. I am good at keeping secrets and I am sure no one has noticed what has been going on over these past six months.

He added: "I hope that by speaking out I can encourage other men to have regular check-ups and perhaps save lives too."

Clifford revealed that he has an 85% chance of a full recovery after receiving treatment.
