Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon has revealed she battled breast cancer.

The 42-year-old, who played Miranda Hobbes in the show, was told she had the disease 18 months ago after a routine mammogram.

She was appearing in play The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in New York at the time of her diagnosis and underwent surgery on a Sunday so as not to miss her performance.

She told US talkshow Good Morning America: "I didn't really want to make it public while I was going through it. I didn't want paparazzi at the hospital, that kind of thing.

"I thought, 'Oh, I don't want this to be happening.' [But] I was very cognisant of if it's going to happen, this is the best way for it to happen; that it's found so early and we can just get right on it."

She revealed that her partner Christine Marinoni had struggled to come to terms with the news, saying: "My girlfriend was the one doing the eating. She was in a panic - and just trying to calm herself down any way she could."
