Tom Cruise has revealed that he was stunned by the media's "cruelty" following the birth of his daughter.
The actor described remarks about Suri's looks and suggestions that she was not his child as "off the charts".
Wife Katie Holmes gave birth to the couple's first child in April 2006, but the new arrival sparked speculation when she was not seen in public for several months.
Cruise told US chatshow host Oprah Winfrey: "When someone compares your daughter to 'Rosemary's Baby'... It's one thing to say things about me but when it's about my children or my family, that is off the charts."
He also defended his declaration of love for Holmes on the show in 2005, where he famously jumped on Winfrey's couch.
The 45-year-old said: "It was just something that I just felt that way, and I feel that way about her. That's just how I felt."
He also admitted that he regrets his controversial comments about Brooke Shields's use of anti-depressants.
