Police and ambulance crews were called to the Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge when staff grew concerned that he may be suicidal.
Scotland Yard said in a statement: "A man was causing concern in a hotel in SW1. He was tended to by an ambulance crew and taken to hospital voluntarily."
The ex-England footballer had earlier sparked fears for his health when he was spotted strolling "aimlessly" around Mayfair on Saturday.
He was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in February following an incident at a hotel in his hometown of Gateshead. He was released two weeks later.
