Jailed rapper's wedding called off

Remy Ma's prison wedding has been called off after her fiancé tried to break her out of jail.

The Grammy-nominated singer planned to marry fellow rapper Papoose at the weekend ahead of her sentencing for assault.

She was given eight years behind bars earlier today after shooting former friend Makeda-Barnes Joseph in the stomach outside a Manhattan nightclub last July.

Officials said Papoose tried to sneak a universal handcuff key into the facility, but it was confiscated by guards. He was then kicked off Rikers Island, where Ma is imprisoned, without being allowed to see her.

He refused to speak to reporters outside the jail, telling them to "get out my face" and accusing them of writing "racist articles".

Ma, real name Remy Smith, was sentenced by the New York Supreme Court for assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion.
