The Hot Fuzz actor admitted that his humour didn't go down well with the majority of the audience, who were drunk.
"When I first started, I did a gig at a homeless shelter in Bristol," Pegg told Metro.
"I was still at university and went along and tried out my whimsical bulls*** studenty jokes on a bunch of men drinking methylated spirits."
He added: "They just wanted me to sing a song."
