Steve Brookstein has described One Direction's Harry Styles as a "legend".

The winner of the first X Factor series praised Styles on Twitter for his alleged relationship with Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack, who is 15 years his senior.

Brookstein said: "Harry Styles is a legend. When I was 17 the only thing I was flicking with my finger was on a Subbuteo pitch."

When a Twitter user criticised him for being a "vile and sleazy, stupid old man", Brookstein referenced Styles' own risqué statement to last year's winner Matt Cardle, which was picked up by the show microphones.

"I wasn't the one who said 'think of all the p*ssy you're gonna get'," he said. "I don't blame him. I blame stupid girls for giving it up."

Brookstein had previously said: "Haha harry styles is getting himself 'some p*ssy' brilliant! all those girly fans are 16 years too young."

Flack was reported to be embarrassed after being spotted kissing Styles and her Xtra Factor co-host Olly Murs later claimed that the embrace was blown out of proportion.

The presenter received 'death threats' from One Direction fans when news of the fling broke. The couple were reported to have spent the night together yesterday (December 6).

Brookstein had previously fallen out with One Direction, despite naming them as the real winners of the 2010 show regardless of their finishing position.

The singer-turned-blogger had insulted the vocal ability of Louis Tomlinson and was criticised in turn by Tomlinson's mother Johanna.

"As you've seen, you've had a thousand people tweeting back what a prat you are, so I'm sure you do feel a pr*ck," Johanna later said in a joint radio interview.

Of recent claims that this year's show is fixed in favour of Amelia Lily after HMV accidentally listed her winner's single for pre-order yesterday, Brookstein said: "There goes her votes. Little Mix still gonna win. Now all we need is Marcus sorted.

"#fixfactor looking forward to The Sun headline on Saturday 'Marcus still in gay relationship'!"
