Alesha Dixon has insisted that Strictly Come Dancing is not being made a mockery of by Ann Widdecombe.

Speaking to Metro, the judge defended the former Conservative MP and said that the show always has a "novelty dancer" in the line-up.

Asked if she was making it into a "comedy show", Dixon said: "With Strictly, there's always some sort of novelty dancer.

"The year I was a contestant it was Kate Garraway, then it was John Sergeant. There are always one or two dancers who are entertaining."

She added: "It's not about competing in the ballroom world championships - it’s about seeing people progress."
