Forsyth, who was made an OBE in 1998 and a CBE in 2005, had previously said that he was "so happy and so relieved" following "speculation" about when he would receive the knighthood.

"I feel very proud that my career hasn't been in vain," he said during the summer. "I just love getting out there and performing and this is a reward that I never expected and hope I'm worthy of."

The 83-year-old's wife Wilnelia was present as he was awarded the accolade by the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Their son Jonathan Joseph also attended, as did Forysth's daughters from previous marriages, Charlotte and Laura.

Colin Firth, Bernard Cribbins, Bryan Ferry and ex-EastEnders actress Brooke Kinsella were among the other famous faces confirmed to receive honours.
