The former Big Breakfast host faced a backlash similar to that against Coronation Street star Gumede when she competed on the programme last year, with fans arguing in both cases that their experience gave them an unfair advantage.
Speaking to Digital Spy as she launched the Argos Toy Exchange, Van Outen explained that the challenges of Strictly are "so different" to anything she had dealt with before.
"In [Natalie's] defence, it's the same [accusations] as what I had, but people need to understand that the style of dancing you do on that show is so different," she said.
"A lot of people that go on Strictly have had some form of [theatre training], so I don't think that Natalie has got an unfair advantage.
"Sometimes its a hindrance. If you have training in one other form of dancing, sometimes you have to break habits."
Van Outen also outed herself as a fan of Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers, stating that every series of Strictly needs someone who "doesn't really care" about the competition.
"He's brilliant. Really good fun," she said. "You need someone that's not taking it too seriously. You do live in a bit of a bubble - the pros are always competitive, they've been brought up like that, and it does rub off on you a little bit. So it is always nice to have someone in the group who doesn't really care about the dancing."
She continued: "I'm really enjoying watching the show... the first night I was on the phone constantly to [Strictly co-star] Kimberley Walsh, because we've become really good friends, going through everything - 'Ooh, do you remember this moment, do you remember that?' and kinda reliving all of that.
"I loved my time on Strictly and worked so hard. I'm not going to put myself through that again, so it's just a joy to put my feet up and watch it."
Van Outen later brushed off suggestions from Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood that there were secret romances between the cast during her year.
"No, [there was] nothing like that," she insisted. "It's not even [flirting], it's just banter. It's part of the show."
Denise Van Outen has teamed up with the UK's number one Toy Retailer Argos to mark the annual Argos Toy Exchange campaign, in collaboration with children's charity Barnardo's.
