The business tycoon confirmed in June that he is continuing to front The Apprentice while also taking on the government job, although there have been complaints that Sugar's new role conflicts with the BBC's aim to be impartial.
Young, a former contestant on The Apprentice, told Now: "I think Sir Alan's appointment is a positive step and much needed.
"Sir Alan taking part in a TV show has nothing to do with it in the grand scheme of things.
"It's just politicians doing the usual - talking a load of hot air instead of focusing on what's really important."
