The actress admitted that her own life had mirrored that of her soap character Jo Sugden, who is currently involved in a domestic violence storyline with her husband Andy.
Speaking out about her past, Pallett told The Sun: "I understand the pain and isolation that Jo feels because I have been there myself.
"I am so passionate about this subject. I’ve decided to talk because of all the women out there who will read this.
"I want to let them know they are not alone. I’ve been there and come out the other end, and I’ve been lucky enough to carry on with my life.
"But like Andy is doing to Jo, my ex manipulated me and got under my skin. He took every grain of confidence, isolating me from family and friends - it was the emotional manipulation that took longer to get over than the bruises."
Pallett said that she chose not to tell co-star Kelvin Fletcher about her personal experience of the situation because she thought it may ruin "the drama" on the show.
She commented: "I kept it secret from everyone including Kelvin because I didn’t want the drama of the scenes to be diluted.
"It was very emotional filming them and Kelvin always gave me a hug afterwards."
