When asked what projects he has lined up, he said: "I know for certain I'm doing Hamlet sometime in autumn on the London stage, and before that there are all sorts of film projects flying around, but the one that looks most real at the moment is Lost City of Z with James Gray."

In September, Cumberbatch was reported to be in advanced discussions to play Hamlet in the classic stage drama, to be directed by Lyndsey Turner.

It would be his first stage performance since his award-winning turn in Danny Boyle's production of Frankenstein at the National Theatre.

Last year, he told The Telegraph: "I hope to return to theatre soon, hopefully as Hamlet, as it's a role I've been interested in for a long time.

"I don't know if there is such a thing as a right age to play the part, but 36 or 37 seems appropriate to me, so I need to do it before long."

Cumberbatch also teased the upcoming third series of Sherlock, which returns on New Year's Day.

He said: "There's a reunion and there's an explanation and there's a marriage and there's a new villain on the scene.

"There's an awful lot to enjoy in the three films we've made of it. And trust me, they're films - they are really richly detailed and you don't go away feeling unsatisfied. There's so much in all of them.

"I've seen the first two and they're terrific. I haven't seen the third yet, but I knew when we were doing that one it was going to be really special. They're all very different and they all hold their own."

Sherlock will return for a third series on January 1, 2014 at 9pm on BBC One. The programme airs on PBS in the US from January 19.
