The 29-year-old Australian actress, who is best known for playing Pepper Steiger in Neighbours, revealed the relationship while on the red carpet opening of her new comedy movie Hall Pass.
Whelan told The Daily Telegraph: "We met through mutual friends and it's been on ever since."
Ashba revealed that he gave Whelan a pet pig called Crackle for Valentine's Day. She added: "We did have a pet tarantula and I had to get rid of my snake when I left Australia."
Whelan also said that working with Owen Wilson on Hall Pass was "so comfortable".
