'The Voice' Adam Levine defends fragrance: 'I wanted to do it right'

By
Adam Levine has defended the release of his signature fragrance '222' after being mocked by fellow Voice coach Christina Aguilera.

The Maroon 5 singer had slammed the celebrity fragrance industry on Twitter in March 2011, when he quipped that he wanted to "put an official ban on celebrity fragrances".

When Levine announced plans for his own signature scent earlier in the month, Aguilera retweeted his March 2011 condemnation and added jokingly: "What a difference a year makes... Welcome to the celebrity fragrance family!"

Levine admitted that he still has misgivings about the release of '222' when speaking to reporters this week.

"I know there's a stigma attached to it. A stigma that I fully understand because I, too, hate the idea of a celebrity fragrance, absolutely, 100%," the singer told People.

He continued: "I kind of thought to myself, 'Well I'm interested in fashion and there's a lot of things about it that could be really cool if done properly'."

Levine also revealed that he was not at all offended when Aguilera pointed out his double-standard.

"[It was] funny and silly and friendly," he quipped. "We were just messing around."

The 'Moves Like Jagger' star's '222' fragrance is expected to be released in May 2013.
