The reality TV star said she bonded with Houghton because they were both "screwed over" by men.
Celebrity Big Brother 4 winner Houghton married Ordinary Boys singer Samuel Preston in August 2006, but divorced 15 months later.
"I love Chantelle, she’s so, so nice," Hayes told Star magazine. "People are really mean about her for no reason.
"She knows exactly what it’s like because she was in a relationship and then she got screwed over by Preston, and I got screwed over by Ziggy."
Commenting on her current relationship status, she added: "I’ve been on a few dates, putting myself out there, seeing a few people and seeing what I think.
"But, at the minute, I haven’t got time for a boyfriend. I just enjoy being taken out on dates and eating nice food!"
