The British musician was one of 60 people to be made official residents during the event on Australia Day.
Sayer told ABC News that he first visited the country more than three decades ago and has now decided to make it his permanent home.
"I think a lot of people know I love this country and always have done," he said.
"Coming down here in '74 I think for the first tour... I just love this place and everything about it. It's nice when you're popular because it does kind of influence you to think 'they all want me here'."
Sayer appeared on Celebrity Big Brother 5 and famously walked out after being refused clean underwear by Big Brother.
