The Wanted star proposed to the Coronation Street actress back in June, just seven months after they began dating.
However, the 22-year-old brushed off suggestions that he had rushed into the commitment, insisting that popping the question to Keegan was the "obvious thing to do".
"I hadn't been building up to it for too long. I just knew that I wanted to be with this woman forever," he told Virgin Media.
"It felt like the obvious and right thing to do. And she said yes straight away, so I'm delighted. If she'd said no, that would be grim. I don't know what I'd have done."
Despite the speed of their engagement, George clarified that fans will have to wait for the couple to tie the knot.
"We haven't rushed in. Even though we're engaged we're not going to go and get married next week, it's a sign of our commitment. I don't think I'm too young. I think you just know when it's right and it definitely was right."
Keegan previously described her engagement to George as "dead exciting", adding: "I seriously can't wait to spend my future with him."
It was reported today that the couple have turned down a £250,000 offer from OK magazine for the rights to their wedding.
