Former Coronation Street star Nicholas Cochrane has said that his family have undergone a "horrific ordeal", following a robbery at their Manchester home.

The actor, who played Andy McDonald on the soap, was not home at the time of the incident, which saw three men enter his house and take a number of personal belongings. However, his wife, mother-in-law and children were at the house, and the two women were injured as they attempted to confront the robbers.

Cochrane's wife tried to prevent one man from entering her child's bedroom, and grazed her right knee in the process. A struggle followed, which resulted in Cochrane's mother-in-law sustaining a cut to the top of her leg. She was later taken to hospital for treatment.

"My family have been through a horrific ordeal that we are all trying to come to terms with," Nicholas explained in a statement.

Det Insp Mark Radford said: "This must have been a terrifying ordeal for the victims who were hurt when they attempted to confront the burglars."
