Patrick Dempsey has raised nearly $1m (£640,082) for cancer research.

The Grey's Anatomy star and 4,000 other bikers took part in a fundraising ride called 'The Dempsey Challenge' from Androscoggin, Maine to Oxford over the weekend.

Money raised from the race is being donated to the Central Maine Medical Centre and the Patrick Dempsey Centre for Cancer Hope.

Dempsey started the Centre for Cancer Hope after his mother Amanda was diagnosed with the disease in 1997.

The actor recently revealed that he feels very close to his Grey's Anatomy co-star Ellen Pompeo.

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
