Producers decided to switch filming locations to capitalise on new tax incentives available in New York.
A group of angry Ugly Betty crewmembers took out an advert in Hollywood's Variety magazine, urging California Governor Schwarzenegger to stop more films and TV shows leaving the West Coast.
An estimated 300 people, including caterers and construction firms, will reportedly lose work due to Ugly Betty's move.
Schwarzenegger insisted that new tax incentives are waiting to be approved by the California legislature.
He said: "What happened was productions that shifted to other states didn't come back to California; they went to Louisiana, they went to Florida, they went to New Mexico because they give great tax incentives."
