The CNN host told followers on his Twitter account that he had been en route to the city when his aircraft was diverted back to New York.
"My plane was 50 mins away from landing in Minneapolis for AGT auditions today, when it turned round and is now heading BACK to NY (sic)," he wrote.
"I will now be landing back in New York an hour before I'm supposed to start judging AGT auditions in Minneapolis."
He then joked: "Happiest man in America right now - @howiemmandel."
Other tweets about the situation included: "Pilot: 'Good news is we'll be on the ground in about 25 mins.' Yes, but it's the wrong ground, isn't it my friend? The WRONG BLOODY GROUND" and "The pilot would like you now to turn off your devices.' Really? Well I'd like the pilot to turn round round and get me to Minneapolis."
The sixth season of America's Got Talent will return to NBC with a two-hour premiere episode on Tuesday, May 31. The previous season was won by blues singer Michael Grimm, who later inked a record deal.
Meanwhile, it has been announced that tonight's episode of Piers Morgan Tonight will pay tribute to Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who passed away earlier today at the age of 79.
